1/21/2024 0 Comments Etherfields awaken realms![]() ![]() To elaborate: I think the advantage of video games is that they can handle crunching values and AI movements without your input. To be honest, I don't think 7th Continent, Tainted Grail, or Etherfields would be better as video games, mainly because they're too simple. Don't all those backers have smartphones, computers or video game consoles to play much better interactive linear story based games? What makes Etherfields and other similar games fun for you in cardboard instead of digital format? I am also surprised how many backers those huge linear-ish story based games get and I truly wonder. I know I am not the only one that prefers "emergent" board game stories over linear story games? I think This War of Mine and Nemesis have worked out really well. Looking at Dice Tower video of ISS Vanguard I feel like we have reached a new kind of weirdness: a Mass Effect computer game inspired board game that would simply be better as a narrative computer game. In all honesty, this feels to me like Awaken Realms is doing great games, but in a completely wrong medium! Tainted Grail and Etherfields both feel like they could be more fun on a computer or tablet. Tainted Grail, Etherfields and the upcoming ISS Vanguard all seem to go into more extremes with that very same concept: very basic, grindy mechanisms paired with a lot of discovery of art and text of millions of cards. The latter was often criticised for having better potential as a computer game due to the amount of fiddliness and shuffling, while having a linked network of linear stories. But then they decided to go all-in with everything that 7th Continent was trying to do. Lords of Hellas was also pretty typical area control game with some bells and whistles. Nemesis as well, they are both "generative" roguelike-ish narrative games. This War of Mine was actually pretty good. Looking at the roadmap of Awaken Realms I feel like the direction they are heading towards is simply wrong. Now that a lot of us are talking about Etherfields after the review by Shut Up and Sit Down and sights are set on ISS Vanguard, I realized that Awaken Realms is leading the charge of creating video games in a tabletop format. r/tabletopgamedesign - Designer's subreddit.r/boardgameexchange - selling/buying/trading games. ![]() Game of the Week Calendar Related Sites & Subreddits The simplest use is to bold game names in your comment and add " /u/r2d8 getinfo" at the end of the post, but this post/sub has other features identified.
